MCP9808 Precision I2C Temperature Sensor
The MCP9808 delivers accurate room temperature for SIMO.io automations. It integrates over I2C for simple wiring and reliable readings.
TL;DR
- Accuracy ±0.25 °C; range −40 to +125 °C.
- I2C with selectable address (AD0–AD2) → up to 8 sensors per line.
- Ideal for thermostats and climate control.
Key Features:
-
High Accuracy: The MCP9808 sensor offers an accuracy of ±0.25°C, making it a reliable choice for monitoring temperature in various environments. Its broad temperature range of -40°C to +125°C ensures it can adapt to a variety of applications.
-
Easy I2C Integration: Utilizing the I2C communication protocol, the MCP9808 connects effortlessly to your Game Changer controller board or other compatible devices. This allows for a simple setup with only two wires for data transmission (SDA and SCL).
-
Flexible Addressing Options: The sensor features three soldering pads (AD0, AD1, AD2), allowing you to define the address for each unit. This capability enables you to connect up to eight MCP9808 sensors on a single I2C line, providing versatile temperature monitoring throughout your home.
-
Ideal for Room Temperature Control: The MCP9808 is commonly used for monitoring room temperature, ensuring optimal comfort and efficiency in living spaces.
-
Custom Scripting for Automation: Implementing temperature-based actions using the user-friendly scripting features within the SIMO.io platform is super easy. This flexibility allows you to automate heating and cooling systems based on your specific needs.
Wiring & Use
Connect via the I2C Interface (IO1/IO2). Set the address pads (AD0–AD2) to place up to 8 sensors on one line. Use SIMO.io to add the sensor and build thermostats and schedules.
With the MCP9808, you can maintain a comfortable, energy‑efficient environment with precise temperature feedback.
Wiring Tip
The I2C communication protocol is generally not designed for long-distance communication, but we've discovered a way to significantly extend cable lengths by using standard CAT5 or higher UTP cable. We have successfully installed various sensors across multiple smart home systems using this wiring scheme:
- Sensor Yellow → Green → SCL
- Sensor Blue → Blue → SDA
- Sensor Red → White/Orange → 5V
- Sensor Black → White/Green and White/Blue → GND
The most important part is that SCL and SDA lines must be paired with GND to protect them from interference. This setup leaves you with three free wires, which we sometimes use to connect a 12V sensor, such as a motion sensor or smoke detector. In this case, we use the Orange wire to transmit +12V, while the Brown pair is used to carry the sensor signal itself.
Using a regular CAT5 UTP cable in a careful and sensible manner allows for extended I2C communication distances, with the added benefit of being able to connect additional sensors.
